Ese Brume finished fourth in the women’s long jump event at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Hungary on Sunday.

The 27-year-old produced a 2.88 meters jump in her second attempt but was edged to the bronze medal by Romania’s Alina Rotaru-Kottmann.

Serbia’s Ivana Vuleta took the gold with a world lead jump of 7.14 meters ahead of Tara Davis-Woodhall of the US who took silver with 6.91 metres jump.

Brume had qualified for the final despite failing to achieve the 6.8 meters mark needed for automatic qualification but earned her finalist status as one of the closest jumpers.

The Nigerian, who has been one of the country’s consistent athletes in recent years, failed to secure a podium finish at the World Athletics Championships for the first time since 2019.

She won bronze in the 2019 edition in Qatar and earned a silver medal in the US in 2022.

In the women’s 100 meters, Rosemary Chukwuma progressed into the semi-final as one of the three fastest after missing out on automatic qualification.

Nathaniel Nwanchukwu ran a season best 48.47 seconds in the men’s 400 metres hurdles to advance to the semi-final.

In the women’s discus throw, the trio of Amaechi Obiageri Pamela, Anumba Ashley and Onyekwere Chioma failed to advance beyond the qualification round.

In the men’s 100 meters race, the duo of Itshekiri Usheoritshe and Seye Ogunlewe crashed out in the semis after finishing seventh and sixth in their respective races.
